Studies have found that one in four men over the age of 30 deal with low testosterone levels – which can impact various aspects of their physical and mental health. However, TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy) can help to restore your testosterone levels and improve your overall health!

What is TRT Therapy?

Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone in the body responsible for a wide range of functions, including sexual development and performance, muscle mass and fat distribution, and energy levels, among others. While there are some variations to this, a testosterone level of fewer than 300 nanograms per deciliter is considered low among men and can lead to a wide range of health complications.

TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy) was developed to combat this by supplementing testosterone to bring the patient’s testosterone levels back to a healthy level. While they all bring forth similar results, TRT can be administered in four different ways:

  • TRT Pellets
  • TRT Injections
  • TRT Patches
  • TRT Gels

Many clinics throughout Murrieta, California, and the surrounding areas offer TRT services, though you must do plenty of research beforehand to protect your best interests.

What causes low testosterone levels?

There are many different health conditions and circumstances which could lead to low testosterone levels.

  • Primary Hypogonadism. Primary Hypogonadism refers to a range of conditions that hinder the production of testosterone within the testes. This could include testicular injury, infections, and undescended testicles.

  • Secondary Hypogonadism. Secondary Hypogonadism occurs when signals from the pituitary gland do not reach the testes, again limiting their production of testosterone. This can be caused by obesity, chronic health issues, and even specific medications.

  • Genetics. Some studies have found that genetics can also play a role in testosterone production levels.

Benefits of TRT Therapy

There are many well-documented benefits of TRT therapy.

Increased Muscle Mass.

Testosterone plays a crucial role in muscle development and retention as it stimulates a process known as protein synthesis, which is essential for building and repairing muscle. As a result, those on TRT will likely notice increased muscle mass.

Improve Bone Density.

TRT is also linked to improved bone density, as lowered testosterone levels can reduce bone development and speed up breakdown. Testosterone contributes to the production of cells known as osteoblasts, which are responsible for bone growth and density.

Enhanced Libido.

As testosterone is the primary sex hormone in the male body, low testosterone levels can lead to lower libido and sexual dysfunction. However, many of those on TRT find that their libido increases as a result of this treatment.

Improved Mood and Well-being.

Low testosterone levels can also have an impact on your mood and mental well-being. For example, a recent study found that “low testosterone levels were found to be associated with features of depression.” TRT is often associated with improved mental health among recipients by improving hormonal regulation and balance.

Improved Energy Levels and Reduced Fatigue.

Fatigue is a common side-effect of low testosterone levels, especially as it is often tied to poor sleeping patterns. However, many people on TRT find that their energy (and sleep patterns) improve as a result.

Improved Cognitive Function and Memory.

A recent study published in Healthline reported that “men with lower testosterone levels tend to have poorer cognitive function than men the same age with higher testosterone levels.” There are many different reasons for this. For example, fatigue impacts our ability to focus on specific tasks and lowers cognitive function. Conversely, TRT can help improve cognitive function by increasing testosterone levels.

What are the potential risks and side effects of TRT therapy?

As with any healthcare procedure, there are potential side effects that you should be on the lookout for. For example, some studies have found that TRT could negatively impact your cardiovascular health, especially if you have a pre-existing condition, though this is rare. Other side effects can include acne, mood swings, or hair loss.

Working closely with your TRT provider will help you to minimize negative symptoms, as it means they can put you on a treatment plan that is specifically tailored to you, factoring in your testosterone levels, lifestyle, and any potential health complications you deal with.

If you notice any side effects when receiving TRT, reach out to your provider immediately to address any concerns. They can help minimize these adverse side effects by suggesting a different form of administration or treatment.

Am I too old for testosterone treatment?

Age is not a limiting factor for testosterone therapy. Regardless of your age, testosterone therapy offers a wide range of benefits for men across all age groups.

Does testosterone treatment replace my body's natural testosterone?

In the body, the hypothalamus and pituitary play a crucial role in detecting and regulating testosterone levels. When testosterone levels are appropriately balanced, natural production is maintained, ensuring optimum levels are achieved. However, discontinuing therapy or experiencing interruptions can lead to a drop in testosterone levels.

In such cases, the hypothalamus and pituitary promptly detect the decline and initiate chemical signaling to restore the natural production of testosterone. However, for individuals with Low-T, the body may transmit insufficient signals to produce adequate testosterone naturally, or it may be unable to respond effectively to these signals. As a result, patients with Low-T who discontinue therapy typically return to their natural baseline production, which is inherently inadequate for optimal well-being.

How long until I start seeing results?

The effectiveness of testosterone injections varies for each patient, as several factors influence the speed of improvement. These factors include existing medical conditions, concurrent medications, body fat percentage, and the severity of testosterone deficiency.

While many patients experience some degree of improvement within four weeks of treatment, the timing may differ from person to person. Some individuals notice positive changes after the first injection, while others may require two to three months to perceive noticeable improvements. Initially, the increase in well-being may be subtle, gradually intensifying over the course of several weeks on treatment.

If you do not observe significant symptom improvement after a few weeks of therapy, we will conduct laboratory tests to assess your progress and explore alternative treatment options. Our goal is to ensure your well-being and work together to find the most effective approach for your specific needs.

Why does my PCP believe I don't require testosterone therapy despite my "normal" or "low normal" levels?

When it comes to blood tests, there are various types with different "reference ranges" used to interpret the results. However, it's crucial to grasp how these ranges are established. Specifically, in the context of serum testosterone reference ranges, it's important to note that the "norms" are not adjusted for age. This means that men ranging from 18 to 80 years old are grouped together, resulting in a wide spectrum of 250-1100 being considered "normal."

Nevertheless, we firmly believe that a 20-year-old individual should not have the same testosterone level as an average 70-year-old and still be categorized as "normal" or "low normal." Numerous studies have shown that testosterone levels should not significantly decline merely due to aging. Therefore, for men experiencing symptoms of Low-T and having what some may consider "borderline levels," treatment with testosterone is often supported and recommended from a clinical standpoint.

At Huddle Men's Health, we take into account individual circumstances and clinical evidence to provide the most appropriate and tailored treatment options for men with Low-T symptoms. Your well-being and quality of life are our utmost priorities, and we strive to ensure that you receive the personalized care you deserve.

What is the recommended duration for testosterone therapy?

While some men may experience temporary conditions leading to Low-T, such as severe infections or short-term physical and emotional stress, it's important to understand that hypogonadism is often a chronic condition. For many patients who have been experiencing the symptoms of Low-T for an extended period, the condition is longstanding and necessitates testosterone replacement therapy.

Just as individuals with diabetes may require insulin or those with hypothyroidism may need thyroid replacement for optimal health, individuals with hypogonadism may require long-term testosterone replacement to reach their full potential. This approach ensures that they can maintain their well-being and achieve an improved quality of life indefinitely.

At Huddle Men's Health, we understand the impact of hypogonadism on men's health and are dedicated to providing comprehensive and personalized treatment options. Our experienced medical team is committed to addressing your symptoms and developing a tailored approach to help you optimize your overall health and well-being.
